New RigFitter Simplifies Selection of Tooling for HDD

A new digital HDD tooling configurator from Vermeer offers HDD operators, owners and dealers a powerful and easy way to select HDD tooling and build a drill string for a pilot bore or pullback.

Available at borestore.com/rigfitter, users simply indicate which Vermeer HDD model they have, then RigFitter provides step-by-step recommendations for compatible tooling, such as: drill rod, sub savers, adapters, transmitter housings and bits.

Selected items are placed in an online shopping cart each step of the way. Once the drill string is complete, users can check out via borestore.com or print out their completed drill string to provide to their Vermeer dealer.

“Vermeer RigFitter takes the guess work out of knowing what tooling options are available for your particular HDD model,” said Chris Fontana, sales manager for Borestore HDD tooling and Vermeer Cutting Edge products. “Vermeer RigFitter is the next best thing to working directly with the HDD specialist at your local Vermeer dealer.”

Hitachi Ships First Mid-Size Utility Excavator to North America

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc.’s (HCMA) first medium-sized Hitachi ZX210LC-6 utility hydraulic excavator, built for the North American market, has shipped from Hitachi Construction Machinery Tsuchiura Works, in Japan. It’s also the first of many Hitachi-built and -branded machines soon to be available throughout North America and Latin America.

To celebrate this important milestone for Hitachi and its customers, the team in Japan responsible for developing and building this first excavator unit, gathered to give it a proper sendoff. Draped across the machine is a banner with the phrase “Empowering the Americas – The Lineup Grows More Powerful.” This message signifies HCMA’s commitment to its customers moving into the future.

Since 1965, with the introduction of the Hitachi UH03, Japan’s first hydraulic excavator, Hitachi hydraulic excavators have been a flagship product of the Hitachi Construction Machinery portfolio. With a range of models available to meet customers’ specific requirements, these machines excel at leveling and forming work for large-scale residential land and the development of social infrastructure for roads, railways and riverways.

Hitachi utility excavators available in the Americas, including ZX210LC-6, are equipped with Solution Linkage Assist, a proprietary machine control feature that enables efficient work to be performed without over-excavating the target work surface. Also, a state-of-the-art hydraulic system with high-efficiency AERIAL ANGLE technology helps improve worksite safety. These machines are designed to help contractors maintain the quality of work amid labor shortages and the decline of experienced operators, as well as to contribute to improved productivity and safe operation.

Local sales for the latest Hitachi-built line of equipment will start in North America in March 2022.

With manufacturing facilities in Banshu, Ryugasaki, Tierra, Hitachinaka, and Tsuchiura Japan, and the U.S. headquarters in Newnan, Ga., HCMA offers outstanding parts availability, an unmatched factory component exchange program, customer and dealer training programs, and a wide range of support services and programs. Backed by the global strength of Hitachi, HCMA is poised to make a major impact on the construction and mining equipment markets in North America and Latin America.

Century Products Falconer FR Receives U.S. Patent

Engineered specifically for contractors who need flexibility, the new, patented, Falconer FR Series is a simple, yet incredibly strong hole opener that allows drillers to interchange Arm & Cone Assemblies right in the field – with no welding required. One body can be used for multiple cutting profiles to handle any formations encountered underground.

Ideal for 50- to 200-class rigs, FR Series use larger cutter segments – 12½ or 17 inches – for longer downhole time and improved bottom-line performance. This lighter weight hole opener boasts a solid body welded to a shaft for superior strength, along with the field-replaceable assemblies, to keep drillers drilling.

The solid-body design virtually eliminates cutter flex, maximizing the energy directed to fracturing rock. Able to withstand the high rotational torque and pull forces needed to fracture harder rock, Falconer FR is a smooth-running hole opener with high penetration rates.

Century Products Inc. is a Sussex, Wisc., manufacturing and custom design firm serving the global HDD industry with downhole tools for diversified markets (oil and gas, HDD, water and sewer, and geothermal) and suitable for a diverse range of drilling rigs. •

Discover the Evolution of Methane Mobile Leak Detection

For years, reduction of gas leaks on aging infrastructure has been an issue for the natural gas industry, particularly the downstream (distribution) marketplace. Heath’s Discover AMLD addresses this issue by reducing methane emissions through the identification of gas leaks with minimum false positives and negatives compared to competing technologies.

Discover AMLD is an open-air, fixed-path Mid-IR Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). Resolution is in the part-per-billion (ppb) range for both methane and ethane. Ethane detection aids in determining whether it’s pipeline gas or naturally occurring biogas. Sensitivity levels, along with a proven detection algorithm, can detect and distinguish between a pipeline gas leak verses a non-pipeline gas leak, such as sewer, landfill and soil/biogas indications.

The mobile system consists of a vehicle equipped with the detector, GPS, anemometer and proprietary software loaded onto the vehicle’s computer/tablet. All components are designed to require minimal modifications to the vehicle and utilize the latest in wireless technology.

Field testing has shown a greater than 95 percent-percent probability of gas leak detection. Heath’s cloud-based Leak Survey Analytics (LSA) software, along with Discover AMLD’s Graphical User Interface (GUI), streams the customer’s data directly to the secured cloud, which can analyze and process it in real-time to produce actionable reports.

Customers have the ability to synchronize, assign surveys and visualize results of the localization and quantification algorithms within LSA’s user interface. This clear visual indication of potential gas leak areas gives customers the flexibility to select and assign leaks to technicians for further investigation and track the status of the leak investigation.
