Thompson Pump and Manufacturing: 50 Years of Innovation
Thompson Pump and Manufacturing Company, a leading U.S. manufacturer of heavy-duty, portable, diesel-powered bypass and dewatering pumps, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in business this year.
Founded in Port Orange, Fla., in 1970 by George A. Thompson and his sons Bill and George M., Thompson Pump began as a dewatering contractor, then soon turned its focus to making and selling the pumps it had been using. Today it is a thriving organization that serves the pumping and dewatering needs of more than 6,000 national and international clients.
From the very beginning, Thompson Pump’s product inventions and innovations positively changed the dewatering and bypass pumping landscape. It has included improving existing products and designs, developing new products to change how portable pumping is done, implementing techniques to speed up the lowering of groundwater, and working with companies to develop new piping products that make sewer bypass and hydraulic fracturing easier, more economical and more efficient.
“Seldom can I go far, especially in the
Southeast, without recognizing a project of some sort – a bridge, a highway, a high-rise building, a hospital, a school, a housing development, a mine, a refinery, a wastewater treatment plant or an electric power generating plant – for which we supplied pumps, expertise and operational support,” said Bill Thompson, president.
He attributes the company’s success to the family and the company’s long-time employees. Many have been there for 25 years and some for more than 40 years. “This longevity symbolizes the high value our family places on the fine people who have supported our company in many different capacities for a very long time. Their contributions to our success cannot be overstated,” he added.
As for the next 50 years, Thompson said the company is refocusing on the design, development and manufacturing of new products, so it continues to be a leader in the industry, with the family’s third generation at the helm.

Sunbelt Rentals Partners with HGTV’S ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’
Sunbelt Rentals is participating in the new, 10-episode season of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which pairs build and design experts to complete extreme, custom home renovations for deserving families who give back to their community.
“Seeing how these families’ lives were completely changed in a matter of a week was something that we were thankful to be a part of,” said Joey O’Connell, district manager at Sunbelt Rentals.
Sunbelt Rentals provided an array of equipment for every home makeover, including forklifts, light towers, manlifts, concrete equipment, skid steers, utilizing resources from 14 locations across California and Utah.
In addition to a staff of mechanics who ensured equipment was job-site ready, Sunbelt Rentals employees procured equipment and organized on-time pickup and delivery to all locations to help ensure there were no project slowdowns under the extreme deadlines of completing each makeover in five days.
“We are committed to the philosophy ‘Make It Happen,’” said O’Connell. “Partnering with the show exemplified the spirit behind delivering value to our communities with our equipment and services – and it showcased teamwork in the truest sense.”

ClockSpring|NRI Announces New CEO
Frank Firsching was named as the new CEO at Clockspring|NRI, the leading, high-performance critical infrastructure solutions company, succeeding Matt Boucher, who stepped down after leading the company’s transformation over the last few years.
Firsching brings almost 30 years of experience starting, leading and building businesses serving the oil and gas, water and wastewater, and power utility industries, with an emphasis on pipeline rehabilitation technologies over the past 15 years.
Most recently, he served as president of the $600-million Infrastructure Solutions business unit of Aegion Corporation. He was also a founding partner in Underground Solutions Inc. which was sold to Aegion in 2016. Previously, he spent 13 years with USFilter, including as president of its $1 billion Water & Wastewater Systems Group.

Volvo CE Pennsylvania Facility Achieves Zero-Landfill Status
The Volvo Construction Equipment site in Shippensburg, Pa., has achieved zero landfill status. The North American campus is only the second Volvo CE location worldwide to earn this designation, which is certified by Volvo Group. The first one is in Braas, in southern Sweden.
All waste generated is now recycled, composted or converted to electricity. This includes day-to-day manufacturing and assembly operations, as well as office activities, preventive and reactive maintenance of equipment and facility systems and its on-site cafeteria.
Volvo CE Shippensburg consists of seven stand-alone buildings on 192 acres, with a total area of 838,342 square feet under roof. The site employs over 800 people.
The journey to zero landfill was a multi-year, multi-step process in partnership with Waste Management, the site’s waste service provider.

Barbco Patents Portfolio Grows Again
Barbco Inc. Co-Owner and CEO Anthony R. Barbera was granted U.S. Patent #10526846, entitled “Material Exhaust Connection for Horizontal Bore.”
This is another significant achievement for this East Canton, Ohio, company’s storied 30-year history of driving the trenchless technology, horizontal boring and underground manufacturing industries forward with world-class capital equipment and cutting-edge technology.
The latest patent makes Barbco boring machines more efficient and more environmentally friendly by improving the handling of spoils from the boring operation.
The patent abstract reads: “An earth boring apparatus may include an earth-boring cutter head, and a casing secured to the cutter head and extending rearwardly therefrom so that the casing and cutter head are rotatable together as a unit. A casing cuttings passage may extend from adjacent the casing front end to adjacent the casing back end. An entrance opening of the casing cuttings passage, which is adjacent the cutter head, is adapted to allow cuttings to move through the entrance opening into the casing cuttings passage. In some implementations there may be a stationary auger positioned within the casing cuttings passage rearwardly from the entrance opening, such that the stationary auger does not rotate when the casing and cutter head are rotated together as a unit.”
