Caterpillar expands remote-control tech to Cat medium wheel loaders
(UI) — Caterpillar has announced an expansion of its Cat® Command for Loading technology to include all Cat medium wheel loaders, excluding the GC models.
This system, which removes the operator from the cab, offers semi-autonomous remote control of Cat 950 through 982 loaders to boost safety and productivity, especially in challenging environments.
Cat Command for Loading provides both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight remote operation, making it well-suited for tasks like demolition, environmental cleanup, stevedoring, and handling materials such as fertilizer, chips, and sawdust. Operators can manage equipment remotely from a safe location while maintaining high productivity.
The remote control system integrates seamlessly with the loader’s electronic and hydraulic systems, providing responsive and smooth control. It also allows users to switch easily between remote operation and manual in-cab control.
The Command hardware is packaged as a dealer-installed kit with a low-profile design that mounts to the loader's roof without requiring welding or wire splicing. The ergonomic console includes basic machine controls, with operator inputs sent directly to the machine’s electronics.
In terms of safety, the system is designed to stop loader movements if the remote shutdown switch is activated, communication is lost, a critical fault is detected, or the console tilts more than 45 degrees from the normal operating position.
The Command for Loading station can connect to multiple machines on the same or different job sites for non-line-of-sight operation, allowing an operator to control one machine at a time from either an onsite location or miles away. This feature is compatible with other Cat Command systems, including those for excavators and dozers.
