Decatur, Ill., to replace 1,000-ft sewer main using horizontal directional drilling
(UI) – A project in Decatur, Ill., is set to replace an aging section of a force main sewer on the east side of Lake Decatur, according to WAND-TV.
The 10-inch cast iron pipe, installed in the 1950s, will be upgraded to a 14-inch PVC force main, increasing capacity and adding redundancy for the southeast side of Decatur and Mt. Zion.
Burdick Plumbing has been awarded the $2.9 million contract, which will see a 1,000-ft section of the new pipe installed under Lake Decatur using horizontal directional drilling.
The new sewer line is part of a 28-mile network maintained by the district, which serves over 80,000 residents in central Macon County. The upgrade is expected to prevent sewer overflows, especially during heavy rainfall, reducing the risk of backups in Lake Decatur.
