Critical repairs underway in Idylwood, Va., to avert Shreve Road sewer pipe collapse
(UI) — Recent discovery of a hole in a sewage line along Shreve Road in Idylwood, Virginia, required immediate repairs, which got under way on June 28, FFXnow reported.
According to the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, the problem was found during a "routine inspection" of the pipe, which transports sewage from 34 residences and Shrevewood Elementary School.
The flaw was identified by DPWES as an obvious "hole void."
The Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik stated yesterday that the flaw was significant enough that "immediate action" was needed to fix the pipe and stop it from collapsing. The defect was discovered by the department's Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) last week.
According to FFXnow, Palchik tweeted, “WCD is initiating an emergency response to perform the point repair. The work will be performed with Utilities Unlimited and is anticipated to start TODAY and be completed within one week.”
The actual pipe repair should be accomplished this week, according to DPWES spokesman Sharon North, but it could take longer to repave the site depending on if the Virginia Department of Transportation permits personnel to operate over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
“We anticipate the pipe repair will be completed this week, but site restoration (repaving) may need to be completed next week pending VDOT decision,” North told FFXnow. “When the work commences, since the sewer is in the middle of the road, the repair will require some traffic lane closures with flaggers directing traffic to safely perform the work.”
According to DPWES, the pipe has a daily capacity of 1.4 million gallons to transport wastewater from nearby homes and the school.
A trenchless cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation, a form of pipe lining repair that may be carried out without having to dig up the pipe, was previously planned for the sewage line.
According to Palchik, the restoration work will now start when the urgent repairs are finished.
