Arcosa Shoring Products

As a provider of infrastructure-related safety equipment and solutions, Arcosa Shoring Products strives to create long-term value for its customers and stakeholders by promoting a culture that values environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility. To that end, Arcosa recently produced a video highlighting its ESG commitment.

“Clearly the trench shoring industry’s number-one priority is safety,” said Joe Zylman, president of Arcosa Shoring Products and NAXSA Board Member. “However, underground construction personnel are not the only beneficiaries of all that we do collectively.

“The environment benefits every time a contractor digs a trench to install shoring, rather than sloping,” he added. “Yes, trench shoring saves lives, but it also does so much more.”

The video, “Environmental Social Governance by Arcosa Shoring Products,” is located on YouTube at https://youtu.be/urqsRbvO75E.

PPI

plasticpipe.org

According to the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc. (PPI), the latest AWWA C901 standard provides specifiers and end-users with the best grade of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for water service pipes.

Under this updated standard, HDPE pressure pipes and tubes from ¾ inch through 3 inches, produced under C901-20 must be manufactured from PE4710 compound and be SDR9 (PC 250). It also raises the cell classification for oxidative resistance to CC3 (for potable water piping systems), the highest and only acceptable level of chlorine and chloramine resistance in potable water systems.

“The seventh and latest edition of this standard requires the use of CTS or IPS-sized HDPE pipe, and removes the option for special sizes that allowed for different SDRs,” stated Camille George Rubeiz, P.E., F. ASCE, senior director of engineering for the Municipal and Industrial Division of PPI. Rubeiz, who is also the co-chair of the HDPE Municipal Advisory Board, chaired the AWWA C901 Subcommittee responsible for updating the standard.

“Basically, the changes to the standard eliminate the use of thin-walled HDPE pressure pipe and tubing for potable water, reclaimed water and also for wastewater service. It’s another way for the HDPE industry to protect communities from non-compliant products and provide the best solution for the replacement of dangerous lead service lines.

“Also, for potable water with chlorine or chloramine residuals,” he continued, “C901-20 requires HDPE pipe with a minimum cell classification of PE 445574(C or E) CC3. CC3 calculations are available in the updated PPI TN-49 (2020) document and in HDPEapp.com.”

Rubeiz said that there is also related information in the recently released AWWA M55 (2020) manual. Additional details about both the new AWWA C901-20 Standard and the updated M55 Manual can be found at the AWWA (awwa.org) and PPI websites.

The warranties deliver enhanced coverage on the machine powertrain and hydraulics, as well as the SmartGrade components, for three years or 5,000 hours, whichever occurs first. The offer is extended through June 30, 2021, and available on eligible machines including the 650K, 700K, 700L, 750K, 750L, 850K, 850L, and 950K models.

LAN to Design New Sewer Line for City of Houston

The city of Houston selected planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to design a new sewer line that will divert wastewater from the Imperial Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Northgate Regional Lift Station.

Part of the City’s overall plan to reduce operational and maintenance costs by consolidating 39 wastewater treatment plants and more than 380 lift station facilities, this project will decommission the 4-million-gallon-a-day Imperial Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The $30-million project consists of approximately 13,000 linear feet of 36-inch sanitary sewer line that will divert more than 9 million gallons a day of wastewater. LAN will identify alternative routes, critical design aspects, bypass pumping plans, preliminary construction costs, constructability issues, and construction phasing. In conjunction, LAN will analyze and determine if there is an efficient and cost-effective method to abandon the Aldine Bender and Northbelt lift stations, to further consolidation efforts.

“With the new sewer line, the city will have a reliable infrastructure to serve the community for the foreseeable future,” said Stephen A. Gilbreath, P.E., LAN senior associate and team leader. “Additionally, diverting the flows and decommissioning these facilities will save costs in the long run and should lead to more economic development in the area.”

Other firms involved in the project include KUO & Associates, Inc. for surveying, Associated Testing Laboratories, Inc. for environmental and geotechnical engineering, ASV Consulting Group, Inc. for subsurface utility engineering, and EJES, Inc. for engineering design support.

Design of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, with construction anticipated to be completed in summer 2025.

CASE Launches First ReNew Centers in High-Volume Used Equipment Markets

CASE Construction Equipment launched the first official CASE ReNew Centers in partnership with dealers in highly populated equipment markets: Associated Supply Company, Inc. (ASCO) in Euless, Texas; Hills Machinery in Charlotte, N.C., and Columbia, S.C.; and RPM Machinery in Lebanon, Ind.

The CASE ReNew Centers thoroughly inspect, service and recondition CASE lease returns and/or other used CASE equipment, which is then sold through CASE dealers. These Centers also feature the highest level of certified technicians in the network and offer reconditioning services for used equipment – CASE, as well as other brands.

“We now offer equipment buyers a range of used equipment reconditioning services and purchase price points to best fit their needs and investment strategies,” said Terry Dolan, head of CASE Construction Equipment-North America. “Equipment buyers can also have faith that ReNew badged used equipment has been properly cared for, inspected and serviced compared to equipment purchased in private sales.”

In addition to ReNew, CASE has two other categories of CASE used equipment:

  • Standard: Basic sale/trade-in (includes all competitive equipment), which is ideal for price-driven buyers who prefer ‘as-is’ transactions and repairing their own equipment.

  • CASE Certified Used equipment (where available) undergoes a 100-plus point inspection, including extensive fluid testing and repair by a Level 2 CASE-certified technician, use of CASE Genuine or REMAN Parts, and features an extended warranty and competitive financing.

Kondex Launches Online Store for HDD Products

Kondex Corporation recently launched its online store, kondexparts.com, featuring its Drill Defender horizontal directional drilling (HDD) product line. The store offers HDD contractors an easy-to-navigate source for purchasing underground boring components.

“What sets our products apart from alternatives on the market is our wear prevention,” commented John Wagner, vice president of sales at Kondex. “We are using a laser cladding additive that exceeds the limits of hard face welding that’s traditionally used in this industry. Not only is laser cladding a more durable and carbide-dense protection, but the application method utilized also allows us to add laser cladding to product areas that otherwise could not be protected.”

Kondex has more than 10 years of experience with laser cladding technology, and historically sees its use increase product life by an average of two-to-three times. This is true for drilling applications, as well as laser cladding on its agricultural and lawn and turf products.

“Our goal with laser cladding is to greatly reduce how quickly a product wears by shielding the base material,” Wagner explained. “As a product wears, its performance also degrades. So, the longer we can maintain near net shape, the longer our products will perform at optimal levels.

“This is a tremendous value in underground drilling, as it reduces the amount of down time otherwise needed to replace worn parts.”
