Elon Musk may bring Boring Co. tunnels to Music City
(UI) — Elon Musk’s tunnel-digging venture, The Boring Co., may soon break new ground in Nashville, Tennessee, according to MySanAntonio.
According to a report from the MySanAntonio, state officials are in preliminary discussions with the company about building an underground transit tunnel connecting downtown Nashville to the city’s international airport.
The Boring Co., founded by Musk in 2017, has previously completed tunnel systems in Las Vegas and under Tesla’s Giga Texas facility near Austin. The proposed Nashville tunnel could resemble the company’s Las Vegas project—a 0.8-mile underground loop beneath the convention center, funded at an estimated cost of $50 million by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
While no official plans, routes, or budgets have been confirmed for the Nashville proposal, officials are reportedly exploring the project as a potential solution to the city’s increasing transportation demands, especially given the steady rise in tourism.
This isn’t the first time a tunnel project has been considered in Music City. Back in 2017, former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry proposed a 1.8-mile, $900 million tunnel beneath downtown, but the measure failed in a public referendum following her resignation, according to MySanAntonio, which cited reporting from the Nashville Business Journal.
