Elon Musk's Boring Co. fined for dumping drilling waste into Vegas sewer system
Elon Musk's Boring Company is facing nearly $500,000 in fines and a cease-and-desist order after Las Vegas water officials said the company improperly dumped drilling fluids into municipal manholes during construction of the Vegas Loop tunnel system.
According to documents obtained by WSMV News, crews allegedly disposed of drilling slurry—containing mud and potentially toxic chemicals—directly into the sewer system despite warnings to stop. The Las Vegas Valley Water District reported cleaning up more than 2,400 gallons of waste that officials say damaged local underground infrastructure.
The Vegas Loop project is further along than Boring Company’s Music City Loop in Nashville, where blasting and drilling are currently underway. The company has previously faced concerns in Nevada related to regulatory compliance and safety practices during tunnel construction, WSMV News reported.
Nashville convention center board members are scheduled to visit Las Vegas in February to review progress on the Vegas Loop as part of oversight for the Tennessee project. The Boring Company has not yet commented on the fines.
