Amarillo to begin $16 million fix on collapsed 4,000-foot sewer line near school

The City of Amarillo is preparing to launch final construction on a long-abandoned sewer line near Hillside that has experienced multiple collapses, according to KFDA TV.

The 30-inch pipe—spanning about 4,000 feet—has degraded over time, with the first major failure occurring in 2014. The upcoming work, expected to begin in fall or winter, will focus on replacing the collapsed segments, starting near Hillside Elementary School.

The $16 million project cost closely aligns with a settlement the city received in a 2017 legal dispute involving the original contractor and pipe manufacturer, KFDA TV reported.

City officials delayed construction to avoid interfering with the school year and have been working with environmental consultants to ensure public and ecological safety.
