Two workers rescued from trench collapse in Sunbury, Ohio
Two Ohio construction workers were rescued Monday after a trench they were working in collapsed, 10 WBNS News reported. According to officials, the workers at the site were installing storm drains and wastewater treatment plant piping about 30 feet underground when the collapse occurred, burying one worker up to his neck in dirt.
Jeff Fishel, director of EMS for Delaware County, said that both workers are expected to be OK, and were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Two other people at the scene who tried to help dig out the trapped workers were also taken to the hospital for a minor injury and dehydration.
BST&G Fire District Chief Chris Kovach confirmed that when firefighters arrived, one person was buried up to their waist and another was buried up to their neck in dirt. Kovach said it took about two hours to safely rescue the second person.
Joe St. John, the Mayor of Sunbury, confirmed that the work site will be shut down through the end of the week while the incident and safety measures are under investigation.
Units from multiple agencies responded to the scene, according to 10 WBNS News, including the Sunbury Police Department, the Liberty Township Fire Department, BST&G Fire District and the Columbus Division of Fire.
