$3.6 million approved for wastewater infrastructure projects in Blair County, PA
The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has approved more than $3.6 million in low-interest loans and grants for two vital wastewater infrastructure improvement projects in Blair County. An announcement was made by Senator Judy Ward, and Representative Scott Barger.
“These investments represent a commitment to ensuring our communities have the reliable infrastructure they need for a safe and sustainable future,” said Ward. “PENNVEST funding helps make these essential projects possible while reducing the financial burden on our residents.”
“Upgrades to these sewer systems will address century-old infrastructure that is not ready to serve our children and grandchildren,” said Barger. “The Freedom Township and Bellwood Borough authorities should be commended for taking initiative to ensure our communities are livable for the future.”
- The Freedom Township Water and Sewer Authority will receive $1.24 million in PENNVEST funding in low-interest loans to upgrade the Newry Pump Station, originally built in 1990. The project will replace aging pumps, controls and piping, repair the degraded wet well, and install a new generator to ensure reliable operation. A bypass connection will also be added to facilitate continuous pumping in case of a catastrophic failure.
- The Bellwood Borough Authority will receive $2.36 million in PENNVEST funding, including $1.76 million in low-interest loans and a $607,955 grant, to replace deteriorating portions of its sanitary sewer system. The system, originally constructed in 1935, has faced significant issues due to aging infrastructure and hydraulic inflow during heavy rainfall. The project includes replacing 3,856 feet of sewer main, laterals and 17 manholes, along with conducting railroad boring and installing associated components. Upon completion, the upgrades will eliminate inflow and infiltration issues, improving system performance and protecting public and environmental health.
The Freedom Township and Bellwood Borough projects are consistent with state land use and farmland preservation planning efforts and are scheduled to begin construction in May.
PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance for sewer, storm water and drinking water projects in communities across the commonwealth.
