Nevada County approves PG&E underground utility project for Red Dog Road
(UI) — The Nevada County Board of Supervisors in California has approved the creation of the Red Dog Road Underground Utilities District, a project aimed at improving wildfire safety by moving utilities underground.
The project, led by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), was approved on Sept. 10 and is expected to be completed by 2033.
The $5.8 million project will be funded through work credits set aside from customer payments for utility undergrounding projects. Red Dog Road was selected due to its importance as a primary evacuation route for the Cascade Shores area, one of Nevada County’s most at-risk communities during wildfires.
In addition to undergrounding utilities, county staff also proposed widening the road to improve access for emergency vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
