Final construction phase kicks off for Indianapolis deep rock tunnel
According to Mirror Indy, Citizens Energy Group’s DigIndy tunnel system has entered its final construction phases, and residents of Indianapolis should be prepared for a few road closures this month as construction continues.
The DigIndy system is a 28-mile network of underground tunnels aimed at reducing sewage overflows from the city’s combined sewer system, Mirror Indy reported.
The project was launched in response to a 2006 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consent decree, which required the city to significantly reduce the amount of sewage that flowed into waterways after rainstorms.
The completed portions of the system have already prevented more than 6 billion gallons of sewage from overflowing into local waterways, according to Citizens.
Construction is expected to reach completion in 2025.
