Colorado's Wolf Creek Pass tunnel drainage project begins
(UI) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in partnership with Williams Construction, is starting drainage improvements on the US Highway 160 Wolf Creek Pass tunnel to enhance safety by reducing icy road conditions at the tunnel's east entrance during winter.
Located between South Fork and the pass summit, the tunnel (Mile Point 174) will be closed during construction, with traffic rerouted onto nearby bypass lanes to minimize disruptions. The project is expected to be completed by November 2024.
"The new drainage system will divert water off the travel lanes, helping to prevent icy or slick conditions," said Julie Constan, Regional Transportation Director.
The project involves upgrading the current drainage system beneath the eastbound lane, installing manholes for easier maintenance, and replacing damaged concrete panels. Delineators will also be added near the new drainage structures.
