Laredo, Texas, launches $30 million project to expand wastewater capacity
(UI) — The City of Laredo has embarked on a major initiative to enhance its wastewater infrastructure. On Oct. 3, the city’s Utilities Department hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a significant 42-inch sanitary sewer tunnel, according to KGNS.
The project will see the construction of a 7,000-foot tunnel, designed to improve the system’s ability to move up to 10 million gallons of wastewater per day. This will connect the Zacate Treatment Plant with the South Laredo Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Ignacio Hinojosa, the project manager, emphasized that the new infrastructure is essential for the city's growing population.
“We’re seeing a lot of growth in the city, so this gives the utility department some flexibility to transfer wastewater from one place to another,” Hinojosa told KGNS. “Ultimately, this is important because it keeps our rivers clean, right? Before it goes into the river, it goes through our wastewater treatment plants. That helps the utilities department have a more efficient wastewater treatment process, and have conveyance so it’s good for the city.”
This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in Laredo, has a budget exceeding $30 million and is projected to be completed by spring 2026.
