USDA invests $6.3 billion in rural energy, water infrastructure across 44 states
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a $6.3 billion investment to upgrade rural and Tribal infrastructure across 44 states, focusing on modernizing energy systems, improving water quality, and creating jobs.
“This administration invests in rural America because we know strong communities are rooted in their people,” USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said. “These investments will build modern infrastructure that will attract employers, creating jobs, vibrant Main Streets, and lasting economic growth for the people who live there.”
The funding will support over 200 projects, including electric grid improvements, water system upgrades, and waste management initiatives.
Improving water systems
Nearly $642 million will go toward ensuring clean drinking water and improving waste disposal systems in 41 states. The funding comes from the Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants program and the Solid Waste Management Grants program.
- Iowa: Rock Rapids Municipal Utilities will receive $25 million to upgrade its wastewater treatment facility, addressing sanitary hazards and benefiting 2,550 residents in Lyon County.
- Ohio and West Virginia: Rural Action Inc. will use $122,000 to promote recycling and composting practices across 14 Appalachian counties, benefiting over 150,000 residents.
Expanding access to reliable energy
Approximately $5.7 billion will be allocated through the Electric Infrastructure Loan and Loan Guarantee Program. The funds will help utility providers and cooperatives build or enhance electric grids, including smart-grid technologies, across 23 states.
- Virginia: Rappahannock Electric Cooperative will receive $293 million to construct 880 miles of power lines, benefiting more than 11,000 customers. Nearly $160 million will fund smart grid upgrades.
- Arkansas: Carroll Electric Cooperative Corporation will use $432 million to construct 900 miles of power lines, connecting more than 10,000 residents. About $11 million will go toward smart grid improvements.
