Charlottesville, Va., to begin work on 24-inch water line for Rivanna River crossing
(UI) — Starting April 8, a section of Old Rio Mills Road between Route 29 and Millers Cottage Lane will be closed for up to 10 weeks to allow for the installation of a 24-inch water transmission line, according to the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority.
Access to Brook Hill River Park will remain open during construction. Drivers traveling from Route 29 to Millers Cottage Lane will be detoured via Rio Road West and Earlysville Road.
The water line installation is part of the South Rivanna River Crossing Pipeline project, which aims to strengthen the region’s drinking water infrastructure. The project will increase the capacity, redundancy, and resiliency of the system by connecting the South Rivanna Water Treatment Plant to an existing transmission line near Route 29 and Polo Grounds Road.
The $5.9 million contract was awarded to Faulconer Construction Company of Charlottesville in September 2024. Completion is scheduled for January 2027.
