Jackson, Miss., implements water and sewer rate hike to fund replacement of 10,000 lead service lines
(UI) — The cost of water and sewage is set to go up for residents in the city of Jackson, Miss., WKHM Jackson’s NewsTalk reported.
The Jackson City Council agreed during its meeting on May 23 to hike water and sewer rates by 8% and 6%, respectively, starting on July 1.
According to a statement by Jackson City Councilmember Laura Schlecte, reported by Jackson's NewsTalk, she said, "The water increase is actually a decrease from the previous proposal we had approved a couple of years ago — three increases of 12%. So, the good news is that the water increase is down by 4%."
The city of Jackson claims on its website that more than 10,000 lead service lines need to be replaced and that this rate increase would assist in covering the associated expenditures.
