ARA

The American Rental Association (ARA) continues to help shape the equipment and event rental industry by investing in two industry leaders to accelerate strategic initiatives on behalf of the membership.

“This past year has driven home the need to address equipment and event rental as two distinct segments with different needs,” said Tony Conant, ARA CEO. “We are hyper-focused on driving value for our members and that only happens when we create products and services that are specific to their segment needs.”

To support the equipment and event segments, ARA added two industry leaders to its executive team.

Josh Nickell leads program development and member engagement for the equipment segment comprised of construction, industrial and general tool rental. His 20 years of industry experience includes working at a rental company franchise, independent and national rental companies, equipment rental software provider and in a consulting capacity. He has been actively involved in ARA volunteer boards and committees.

James Auerbach serves as the event segment leader, overseeing member engagement and strategic program development. Over the past 25 years, he has held executive roles in the special event, equipment rental, event production and hospitality industries, most recently as senior vice president of CE Rental.

In other news, Michael Kneeland, CEO, United Rentals, Stamford, CT, was one of five inductees into the ARA Hall of Fame. The industry’s highest honor, this award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on the equipment and event rental industry at the national or international level.

Starting in sales for Free State Industries, an aerial equipment company, he became its president and eventually negotiated its sale to Equipment Supply Company in 1996. When United Rentals acquired the company in 1988, he assumed a senior management role and in 2008 became the third CEO in United Rentals’ history.

One of Kneeland’s persistent messages as a rental executive was “being the biggest doesn’t matter unless you’re also the best,” reflecting his take on customer service, ingenuity, creativity and imagination. In 2011, he was part of establishing ARA Rental Market Metrics, digital customer scorecards to track branch, district, and company-wide performance in key areas.

He is also an advocate of helping military veterans transition into civilian jobs and has supported diversity and inclusion initiatives, developing three multicultural employee resources groups: Women United, Veterans United, and Together United.

While he retired from his CEO role in 2019, he remains involved by continuing as chair of the board of United Rentals and chair of Maxim Crane, and serving on other company boards.

ADS Wins Wisconsin Recycling Award

Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. (ADS), a leading provider of water management solutions, received the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2020 Recycling Excellence Award for Innovation. Specifically, the award recognizes the company for exceeding expectations with its recycling program and providing a higher standard of service.

ADS products are used in the stormwater and on-site septic wastewater industries, across a broad range of end markets and applications, including non-residential, residential and infrastructure construction; agriculture; and road projects.

“We have developed and have continued to refine the methods for incorporating post-consumer recycled plastics into our pipe and other products,” said Brian King, executive vice president of Product Management and Marketing for ADS, about the honor.

These efforts have made ADS one of the largest users of recycled plastic – last year, totaling 550 million pounds of post-consumer and post-industrial material.

“In Wisconsin alone, we purchased nearly 7.5 million pounds,” he added. “To put it in perspective, our ADS Mega Green® pipe, containing 60-percent recycled content, would translate to 1.1 million linear feet of 24-inch-diameter pipe with this discarded material from Wisconsin. Based on information from the Association of Plastic Recyclers, there is also a savings of more than two million KG of carbon emissions.”

From another perspective, ADS products extend the short shelf life of common household products in containers not made from recycled materials – to a projected life span of more than 100 years
