NASSCO: Active Year Marks Diverse Efforts For NASSCO
Welcoming a new executive director, continuing programs to establish and improve wastewater infrastructure standards, and educating the industry about maintaining and rehabilitating sewer infrastructure kept members and staff of NASSCO busy throughout 2018.
“The year 2018 was a pivotal year for NASSCO [National Association of Sewer Service Companies],” said Tim Vivian, the association’s president. “NASSCO continues to grow, finishing 2018 with over 600 members. We have a variety of initiatives that will strengthen the trenchless industry for years to come. In 2018, Sheila Joy became NASSCO director, assuming the role of the organization’s leader and standard bearer. Training was strong in 2018, especially in the areas of PACP, LACP and MACP with training conducted throughout the year.”
Also, in 2018, NASSCO:
- Started and completed Phase 1 of a CIPP report which studies the emissions created during a steam-cured CIPP installation.
- Started Phase 2 of its CIPP Study which is field testing of various CIPP installation
- Partnered with Skills USA to build awareness of career opportunities in the field of underground infrastructure and began to develop a training program for young people who want to work in the industry.
- Continued to support industry partners such as the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and its M.A.s at a variety of conferences and meetings; and published a maintenance operation protocol with WEF.
Looking ahead, Vivian said in the coming year NASSCO will complete and publish the findings of its Phase 2 CIPP Study and will introduce NASSCO and the careers available in the sewer industry at Skills USA’s annual event in June.
Vivian is president of Green Mountain Pipeline Services, and his term as president of NASSCO ends at the 2019 annual meeting. Stepping up to the president’s position will be Jacob Trapani, vice president of BLD Services.
NASSCO was established in 1976 with the goal of improving the success rate of the pipeline rehabilitation industry through education, technical resources and industry advocacy. Through continuing research, evaluation, sharing information, and training, NASSCO sets industry standards for the assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground infrastructure and works to ensure the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless technologies.

NASSCO Begins New Leadership Era in 2018
Sheila Joy was named NASSCO director in April 2018. A graduate of California State College with a BS degree in business administration, she has held marketing positions with companies in California and Washington, D.C.
She became involved in the underground construction when she began serving a client who was a NASSCO member and subsequently worked with others in the industry.
These connections led to work directly for NASSCO providing marketing and public relations assistance and preparation of news releases. Since becoming NASSCO director, Joy has become PACP/LACP/MACP-certified, plans to take the confined space entry training, and become ITCP certified.
