Felling Trailers Inc., based in Sauk Centre, MN, is a community-focused company that continually looks for ways to engage people in the world of manufacturing –especially young people, in junior high and high school.
That’s why the company developed “Weld Camp,” via Sauk Centre Community Education, for local students, ages 12 to 18, last fall. The interactive, hands-on, real-world experience was created with the main goals of inspiring, encouraging and supporting students in the basic skills of welding.

During 12, one-hour sessions, four students learned about and explored Safety in Welding, Introduction to Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Measurements, Welding GMAW Short Circuit, and Spray and Pules, led by Ben Myhre, Felling’s weld training instructor. Then, they completed a final welding project, consisting of print verification, welding operations, and sanding operations.

“It is always great to see the next generation of welder,” said Mayhre. “There is going to be an extreme shortage of welders in the future. The fact that there are kids below the age of 18 generally interested in welding and building things is great.”

It was so well-received that Felling plans to offer the camp again in early 2018, and then maybe three to four times a year.

Felling Trailers has provided innovative trailer solutions for more than 40 years,  currently manufacturing over 5,000 trailers a year, including its 240-model standard line and customized trailer division.
