NASSCO Celebrates 40th Anniversary Hawaiian Style

The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) celebrated its 40th anniversary in style by holding their annual convention at the Sheraton Resort in Maui, HI. A record crowd of more than 200 attended the convention, enjoying warm weather, blue skies, sandy beaches and clear ocean waters all while mixing in a strong schedule of general business meetings, educational sessions, municipal forum and committee meetings.

“It’s been a great year for NASSCO,” said outgoing President Mark Metcalf of Hoffman Southwest Corp. “I’ve been very fortunate to be part of such a great organization this last year. The entire staff has been tremendous as well.”

Going into the convention, NASSCO had boosted membership by 20 percent over the previous year to 554 members and continues to add membership at a strong rate. That membership growth has come from all categories including contractors, municipalities and engineers.

The convention kicked off with the annual golf tournament followed by a welcome reception. On the next day, NASSCO members got down to business beginning at 7 a.m. with the general membership business meeting that included various overviews and updates of association business followed by division and committee reports.

NASSCO has an extremely active committee structure encompassing all aspects and needs of the sewer infrastructure market. After a brief lunch break, multiple committee meetings were held until mid-afternoon.

The second full day of meetings is called Technical Day as various technologies and case studies are presented in an educational manner. These sessions also got an early start at 7 a.m. Two program tracks allowed for diverse yet comprehensive array of topics. The morning wrapped up with a Municipal Forum where representatives from Los Angeles County, San Francisco Water, Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility and the City/County of Honolulu interacted with audience members about their operations and challenges in maintaining efficient and effective sewer operations. More committee meetings were scheduled for the afternoon.

The final evening of the convention featured a traditional Hawaiian luau with an impressive assortment of food and island entertainment.

As Metcalf now moves into the past president’s role, Kay Doheny of Jack Doheny Companies, becomes the 2016-17 NASSCO president. Other officers are: Vice President Peter Kurz, Virginia Public Works Equipment; Secretary Tim Vivian, Green Mountain Pipeline Services; and Treasurer Jacob Trapani, BLD Services.

The new board of directors consists of: Fred Chase, Lametti & Sons; Frank Kendrix, Insituform; Will Markey, Heitkamp; Daniel Magill, Avanti; Laurie Perkins, Wright-Pierce; Joe Schotthoefer, Doetsch Environmental; Bob O’Connor, Municipal & Contractor Sealing Products; Guy Leslie, RapidView; and Max Gowdy, LiquiForce.
