California Sewer Pipes Get New Life

Work began in January to repair sewer pipes in Calavo Gardens and Rancho San Diego, CA.

In the Calavo Basin Sewer Rehabilitation-Phase 1 project, Otay Water District began replacing deteriorated or sagging sections of sewer pipe in the Calavo Gardens neighborhood. As a part of the District’s sewer management program, sections of pipe with a higher probability of failure have been identified and will be replaced.

Using a video camera system, the District inspected its sewer pipes, identifying areas where sections of the pipe have sagged. In these sections, heavy debris can accumulate. Over time this can result in a pipeline break or sewer spill. This project is also part of the District’s ongoing sewer maintenance program and serves to prevent costly clogs, brakes or spills.

Construction will occur in sections between one manhole and the next, with construction in each section lasting one to two weeks. An upstream manhole will be fitted with a pump bypass system. Sewage is then moved through a fully contained roadside relay system to the next downstream manhole. The project is expected to be complete in June.
