Vermeer Launches S3 Navigators
“Speed, simplicity and sound are represented by the S3 designation,” said Jon Kuyers, Vermeer senior global product manager, underground. “To earn the S3 badge, a machine must document improvements in each of those areas.”
Kuyers said each model has been upgraded with a simplified design providing enhanced speed of operation to increase productivity, and significant reductions in sound levels during operation.
The three new models are the D23x30 S3, D24x40 S3 and D40x55 S3. All are available
now through the Vermeer dealer organization.
D23x30 S3
The D23x30 S3 is powered by a 100-horsepower liquid-cooled, turbocharged Tier 4-compliant diesel engine capable of producing more power than its predecessor. Pullback is rated at 24,000 pounds; rotational torque is 3,000 foot pounds, and maximum spindle rotational speed is 219 rpm. The carriage can travel 206 feet per minute. With a guaranteed sound power level of 99 dBA and an operator ear rating of 78.7 dBA, the D23x30 S3 is one of the quietest drills available. This model’s power-to-footprint ratio contributes to its low cost of operation.
D24x40 S3
The D24x40 S3 is powered by a 125-horsepower, liquid-cooled, turbocharged Tier 4 diesel engine. It develops 28,000 pounds of pullback, 4,200 foot pounds of rotational torque and spindle speeds to 253 rpm. It features improved carriage and drill rod rotational speeds and rod breakout efficiency. Ground speed also is faster than the previous model. Its guaranteed sound power level of 104 dBA and operator ear rating of 82.9 dBA are significant improvements.
Introduced in 1993, the D24x40 series has been a workhorse of the industry, and the new S3 model is even better with more drilling power, plus reduced sound and cycle times make it an ideal choice for a variety of HDD applications.
D40x55 S3
The D40x55 S3 has a 140-horsepower, liquid-cooled, turbocharged Tier 4 diesel engine and produces 40,000 pounds of thrust/pullback and 5,500 foot pounds of rotational torque which is a more than a 10 percent increase in thrust and torque over the D36x50 Series II. Maximum spindle rotational speed is 253 rpm. The 188 feet-per-minute carriage speed is seven percent faster than its predecessor.
Several drill rod options are available. A redesigned, excavator-style climate-controlled cab allows operators better visibility, more legroom and greater comfort in unfavorable climate conditions. A 104 dBA guaranteed sound power level and operator ear rating of 82.9 dBA make this drill significantly quieter than the model it replaces. The InSite Fleet remote monitoring system comes standard on the D40x55 S3 and D24x40 S3 and is available as an option on the D23x30 S3.
S3 Series models have in common numerous production enhancing features, including a common control system that reduces training time and gives operators the ability to operate a variety of Vermeer drills. This includes common joystick controls, digital display and improved onboard diagnostics.
The S3 system design uses a CAN based architecture and power distribution module that reduces the amount of wiring and fuses for greater reliability. A DigiTrak
Aurora interactive, full-color touch-screen display delivers real-time, easy-to-view location information and bore plans.
In addition to directional drilling equipment, Vermeer manufactures other underground construction equipment including trenchers and vibratory plows, as well as surface mining tree care, environmental and agricultural equipment. Vermeer products are sold and serviced by a worldwide dealer network.
