Auger Boring: Equipment Spotlight
Auger boring equipment from McLaughlin Group, American Augers, ICON Tunnel Systems/Bohrtec, Akkerman, Bor-It Mfg., The Robbins Company and Barbco.
McLaughlin Group
The McLaughlin ON Target auger boring system steering head allows contractors to not only control horizontal directional changes, but also allows for lateral changes. The ON Target system allows contractor to also control the direction of the bore in a lateral (left to right) movement, providing more accuracy for difficult on-grade bores. The cutting path — grade and lateral movement — of the steering head is controlled by hydraulic actuated panels that open and close to keep the head on the intended path. A control station features a hydraulic power pack to control the movement of the steering head, and a built-in water level helps monitor grade throughout the bore. Two halogen lights in the control station indicate lateral (left and right) steering head movements. It is capable of installing steel casings between 12 and 70 inches. 800.435.9340, mightymole.com
American Augers
The 72-1200 NG horizontal auger boring machine offers a patented rack-and-pinion drive for rapidly pulling the boring machine back to the starting position on the track, without dogging or winching. The standard 72-1200 NG is equipped with a Caterpillar C7 ACERT, Tier III 250-hp diesel engine and has a maximum thrust rating of 1,200,000 pounds. The total working range of the machine is 24 to 84 inch product casing diameters, and has 200,641 foot-pounds of maximum torque. The 72-1200 NG also features a Quik Split frame design that allows the machine to be separated into sections to accommodate lighter and fasters lifts into and out of the bore pit, and aids the operator in being able to facilitate better and safer machine positioning. The machines Quik Tran technology system provides up to 10,000 pounds of push/pull at high speed. 800.324.4930, americanaugers.com
ICON Tunnel Systems/Bohrtec
ICON Tunnel Systems offers the BM600LS Pilot Tube Auger boring Machine from Bohrtec that can handle jacking pipe with maximum outside diameter of 48 inches. This machine boats 262 tons of jacking force, 112 tons of pull back force and 22,186 foot-pounds of torque making it the most powerful Pilot Tube Machine in the United States and Canada. These products are serviced and handled by ICON Tunnel Systems. 800.836.5011, icontunnelsystems.com
Akkerman
One of the most common applications for the Akkerman single stage GBM 240A jacking frame is its use in conjunction with a standard auger boring rig. Combined, the GBM offers auger boring rig contractors the ability to provide reduced casing diameters and longer drives with extreme accuracy that are unobtainable with an independent auger boring rig. 800.533.0386, akkerman.com
Bor-It Mfg.
The Bor-It Model 60 Destroyer has a 180-hp diesel engine with a five-speed transmission. The machine offers a maximum torque output of 259,018 foot-pounds with a normal thrust of 1,206,374 pounds and bores a diameter range of 24 through 60 inches. The Model 60 Destroyer horizontal earth-boring machine is packaged to provide extra power for those extra-rugged boring applications. 800.289.6639, bor-it.com
The Robbins Company
From alluvium to cobbles, the Robbins Small Boring Unit (SBU-A) is making short work of mixed ground. A circular cutterhead, available in diameters from 24 to 72 inches, is custom designed for crossings up to 500 feet long. Each cutterhead is used in conjunction with an Auger Boring Machine (ABM). At a recent project in Clinton, IA, contractor L.J. Keefe utilized two SBU-As and a larger 72 inch Motorized SBU (SBU-M) for successful crossings below a river and highway. The machines completed crossings ranging from 200 to 395 feet long in hard clays—holing through almost exactly on line and grade. 440.248.3303, therobbinscompany.com
Barbco
Barbco’s 24-100 Auger Boring Machine is powered by a 19-hp Lombardini diesel engine. This machine can produce an actual 113,097 pounds of thrust. It is equipped with a three-speed transmission and a 44:1 gearbox and produces 7,356 foot-pounds of torque in first gear at 22 rpm. The front drive is equipped with a 2 ¼-inch hex drive. 800.448.8934, barbco.com
