UCT: Your total source for industry education and networking


Seeing the vast variety of products, networking and catching up with friends plays a powerful part in the Underground Construction Technology Conference & Exhibition (UCT) experience. So, too, does great education to support your business objectives. UCT delivers diverse educational sessions that are intensive, yet are timed to give you ample opportunity to visit Exhibit Hall A of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX. The educational program runs Jan. 22-27 and the exhibit hall will be open Jan. 24-26.

We begin the week with the pre-UCT program. CUIRE’s Engineering and Inspector Training Schools will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22 and Monday, Jan. 23. Each school (six are being offered during UCT) qualifies for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs) through the University of Texas at Arlington. A new addition to the pre-UCT line up is the Fundamental Engineering/Design of Rigid Pipes workshop that also will be held on Monday. Engineering concepts required to produce valid rehabilitation designs will be covered. NASSCO brings its series of rehabilitating underground utilities seminars, which will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, Thursday, Jan. 26 and Friday, Jan. 27. Attendees earn certification upon successful completion of NASSCO sessions. NASTT will once again offer Good Practices courses. The sessions are being taught on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The Staking University Locator Certification Seminar returns to UCT, offering an in-depth look at troubleshooting techniques and mastering locating equipment. Staking U’s seminar will be held on the last day of UCT, Thursday, Jan. 26.

These sessions require a separate registration; however, the bonus to each attendee is that the pre- and post- sessions include FREE registration to the full UCT educational program. There are several registration options available for attendees who wish to attend the UCT primary program only.

Keeping the Industry Educated

The most current market information around is available during the weeklong educational program.
UCT’s primary program runs Jan. 24-26 and qualifies for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs) in conjunction with the University of Texas at Arlington. The 2011 UCT attendee survey showed 92% of attendees found the content informative and valuable.

Pre- and post-UCT program/workshops are Jan. 22-27. Many offer industry certification and all include free admittance to the full UCT program.

WATERWORKS 2012: Can We Afford It?
WaterWorks 2012 is the premier forum where water professionals meet to exchange ideas and gain greater insight into current economic conditions and challenges being faced by cities and counties across the country.

The message at WaterWorks 2011 was about getting attendees to “Face the Reality” that water is the “blue oil” of the 21st century. We asked, “Would the quantities of water needed even be available at any cost?”

The Center for Underground Infrastructure Research & Education (CUIRE) will offer its 9th Annual Engineering and Inspector Training and Certification Schools.

• Mud School for Trenchless Technology Methods (includes drilling mud properties, mixing, and pumping for successful HDD and pipe jacking/microtunneling operations)
This school will provide attendees everything they need to know to properly mix and apply drilling fluids for trenchless applications, including spoil removal and lubrication applications. HDD School is recommended to in conjunction with this course.

• Pipe School (includes comparison, planning, design and construction issues, properties, manufacturing, jointing, repairs and tapping, and benefits and limitations of each pipe material used in transmission and distribution of water, wastewater, gas and oil)
This school presents applications, advantages and limitations of each type of pipe, such as ductile iron, concrete, vitrified clay, PVC, HDPE, polymer concrete, bar-wrapped pipe, pre- stressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP), fiberglass, etc. and new development in pipe materials and jointing systems. Either Pipe Jacking School or Pipe Lining and Replacement School is recommended in conjunction with this course.

• Geotechnical School (includes surface and subsurface investigation requirements for trenchless and open-cut methods)
This school presents geotechnical requirements for both trenchless and open-cut applications. All methods of subsurface explorations, both in the office/lab and in the field, such as utility locating, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), geophysical and geological methods and soil boring and laboratory testing will be discussed. Taking Pipe Jacking or HDD School is recommended in conjunction with this school.

• Pipe Lining and Replacement School (includes trenchless renewal and pipe bursting/removal methods)
This school will provide essential information about rehabilitation and renewal/replacement of old and deteriorating pipelines using trenchless technology methods, including CIPP, spray-on linings, pipe bursting, sliplining, modified sliplining and close-fit pipe. Design, construction, inspection and QA/QC methods will be discussed. New applications, such as use of carbon fibers, also will be presented. Taking Pipe School is recommended in conjunction with this course.

• Pipe Jacking and Microtunneling School (includes bore and jack, box culvert, ramming methods)

Fundamental Engineering Approach To Structural Rehabilitation Design Of Rigid Pipes

Monday, Jan. 23

This 8-hour workshop will present the essential engineering concepts required to produce valid structural rehabilitation designs for rigid pipes (i.e., increased structural capacity of the deteriorated host pipe). These concepts include engineering models of buried structures, soil load estimation and stress/strain analysis of the loaded structure.

This design process will be compared to current design methods such as ASTM F1216 and WRc. The discussion will focus on gravity flow sewer pipes but will be extended to internal pressure pipes as well. Appropriate technical references will be identified. Pipeline Assessment & Certification Program (PACP)

The PACP class will provide two days of comprehensive training resulting in certification upon successful completion. The program will demonstrate to municipalities, engineers and contractors the benefits and impact of PACP, which provides standardization for the inspection industry. The PACP will also provide standards for data exchange format, map symbology and certification of TV inspection software.

In addition to the use of PACP codes, the course will provide a review of the history of defect coding and asset management worldwide, discussion of technical issues that affect the rate of pipeline deterioration, instructions on implementation of the PACP sewer pipeline grading system and a written certification examination.

CIPP Inspector Training & Certification Program

Limited to 30 attendees

This course is designed for construction inspectors, consulting engineers and municipal engineers who are onsite inspecting a cured-in-place pipeline project and all who need a comprehensive understanding of the CIPP renewal technology. The course will cover specific areas of expertise that are needed to ensure that a project is built correctly and meets the requirements of the contract documents.

The two-day training course includes existing pipe conditions and how they affect CIPP installations; overview of CIPP technology; field I installation of CIPP; writing and understanding performance specifications for CIPP; and other pipeline renewal technologies and applications. Also included are sample forms that can be used as the basis for recording information on the project site. The forms will have specific quality assurance/quality control requirements for each technology, the inspection procedures required and the information that needs to be documented for a complete inspection record. Each student, upon passing an open book exam, will receive a certificate of completion.

NASTT Good Practices Courses

The North American Society for Trenchless Technology, founded in 1990, is a not-for-profit, educational and technical society that is dedicated to promoting the benefits of trenchless technology for public awareness through education, training and research. HDD Consortium Horizontal Directional Drilling
The HDD Good Practices Guidelines course provides an in-depth overview of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and covers eight topics: (1) HDD applications and processes, (2) HDD tooling, (3) bore tracking and equipments, (4) job site safety, (5) overview of drilling fluids, (6) HDD design, (7) bore planning, and (8) risk reduction, mitigation and troubleshooting.

The course is based on the HDD Good Practices Guidelines Manual, an industry-developed document which provides contractors, engineers and owners with a set of guidelines to assist in successful HDD installations and operations. Each course participant will receive a complimentary copy.

Cured-In-Place Pipe
The CIPP course is geared to provide an in-depth overview of wastewater mainline and lateral pipe rehabilitation using CIPP from planning and design to job completion. Topics include CIPP Definition, Description, Background & Methods; CIPP Application Range in Trenchless Rehabilitation; Design of CIPP for Gravity Applications; Design of CIPP for Pressure Applications; Construction & Installation; Specifications & Tendering; and Inspection & QA/QC.

Staking University’s Locator Certification Seminar
Staking University is an adult education locator-training program featuring a hands-on delivery format. Instructors with over 100 years of combined practical experience teach these classes. Historical Sewer Pipe Exhibit On Display
Another UCT exclusive is the very popular RehabZone®. The ’Zone is an interactive “educational forum” displaying the history of the pipeline infrastructure and features current technologies available in the trenchless rehabilitation industry. This show-within-a-show is located in a special section of the UCT exhibit hall. Attendees can walk through the historic sewer and pipe artifacts exhibit and the interactive displays to gain an understanding of the generic technologies used in sewer rehabilitation. While the ’Zone has been a part of UCT for the past 10 years, the content and attractions are always evolving.

It’s Anything But Par For UCTA Golf Tournament
Join your colleagues and friends at the Underground Construction Technology Association (UCTA) Gulf Coast Chapter’s Scholarship Golf Tournament to be held Monday, Jan. 23, the day before UCT kicks off. All proceeds fund the UCTA’s college scholarship program.

About San Antonio, the Host City
