Austin Water repairs wastewater main after 115,000-gallon overflow
3/7/2025
(UI) — On March 4, Austin Water crews responded to a broken 16-inch wastewater main behind 5806 Cyrilla Drive, leading to a sanitary sewer overflow of approximately 115,000 gallons. The wastewater spilled into a nearby dry creek bed and pond, though officials have not identified any impacts on fish or aquatic life.
Repair crews arrived shortly after the overflow was discovered at 9:32 a.m. and worked to contain and stop the spill. Austin’s drinking water supply remains unaffected, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified.
Austin Water advises residents in the affected area to take precautions:
- Individuals with private drinking water wells within a half-mile of the site should boil water for at least one minute before use or consider distillation. Water testing and disinfection may be necessary before discontinuing these measures.
- Those who purchase water from a public supplier should check with their provider for safety guidance.
- The public should avoid contact with affected soil, water, or waste material. Anyone exposed should bathe and wash clothing thoroughly.
