Nelson County, Ky., $29 million water main project to add 15 million gallons a day
(UI) — Construction is underway on a $29 million water-main expansion that will deliver an additional 15 million gallons of Ohio River water each day to Nelson County by late 2026.
The project links Louisville Water’s ample Ohio River supply to the North Nelson Water District via a 42-inch main along I-65 and a 24-inch main on Highway 245. The work received Kentucky Public Service Commission approval in February.
“We are very proud of this $29 million investment because of the long-term impact it will have on the Bardstown community,” said Spencer Bruce, Louisville Water president & CEO. “For Louisville Water, partnering with North Nelson Water District and the City of Bardstown was an easy decision.”
Nelson County Judge-Executive Timothy Hutchins called the project “a game-changer,” adding that reliable infrastructure is critical for continued economic growth.
Bardstown Mayor Dick Heaton noted the area’s distilleries, manufacturers, and farms will benefit: “Because of this partnership, members of our business community will have the water they need for the foreseeable future. Water grows Bardstown!”
The three entities finalized plans throughout 2024 and early 2025, with completion targeted for the end of 2026.
