Fiber optic installation completed at Newark airport, says Transportation Secretary
Construction on a new fiber optic line to support the air traffic control system that serves Newark Liberty International Airport has been completed, NJ.com reported. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the project completion in a statement Thursday.
According to NJ.com, the high-bandwidth fiber optic lines replaced outdated copper lines to provide more reliability and resiliency, after several concerning incidents in recent months when air traffic controllers experienced complete data and radar blackouts.
The FAA successfully completed the installation and testing in June of a brand-new fiber optic communications network between New York and the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON), which controls aircraft arriving and departing Newark Airport, Duffy said.
