Honolulu reports two sewer overflows after heavy rain
(UI) — Heavy rains triggered two sanitary sewer overflows in Honolulu on Monday, according to the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV).
The first overflow occurred at 8th Avenue and Hinahina Street, where a surcharged manhole released 2,050 gallons of untreated wastewater into a nearby storm drain. ENV crews received the call at 6:04 p.m., arrived at 6:30 p.m., and stopped the spill by 6:45 p.m.
A second overflow was reported at Lowrey Road and Kaaipu Avenue, where another surcharged manhole spilled 1,950 gallons. Crews managed to recover 500 gallons, but approximately 1,450 gallons entered a storm drain. The incident was reported at 7:06 p.m., with crews arriving at 7:35 p.m. and stopping the spill by 7:45 p.m.
The Hawai‘i Department of Health was notified and waived sampling, but warning signs will be posted in the affected areas. Cleanup, disinfection, and deodorization were completed on Jan. 27.
