Tennessee OKs land lease for Elon Musk’s Nashville tunnel project amid public pushback
(UI) — The Tennessee State Building Commission has cleared a key hurdle for Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, granting the firm a no-cost lease to use state-owned land as the launch site for its proposed Music City Loop tunnel, according to Axios Nashville.
The lease, approved July 31, allows the company to stage equipment and begin boring operations from a state parking lot in Nashville. Under the agreement, The Boring Company must restore the property to its original condition within two years, Axios reported.
The decision drew vocal criticism from local residents and some lawmakers, who raised concerns about transparency and the project’s potential impacts. State Sens. Charlane Oliver and Heidi Campbell were among those opposing the measure during public comments at the commission meeting, according to Axios.
Supporters of the project, including state officials who voted in favor, view the tunnel as a transformative step toward connecting downtown Nashville with the airport. The proposed 10-mile tunnel still requires additional state approvals before construction can advance further.
