North Auburn, Calif., wastewater pipeline extension moves forward with contractor selection

(UI) — Construction on the first phase of a $22 million wastewater pipeline extension in North Auburn is set to begin, aiming to ease capacity constraints in the area.

Last month, the Placer County Board of Supervisors awarded a $10.8 million contract to Steve P. Rados, a Santa Ana-based contractor, for the installation of a wastewater gravity trunkline. The pipeline will run from near Edgewood Road to the Sewer Maintenance District 1 (SMD1) Regional Pump Station on Joeger Road.

The first phase of construction will cover Quartz Drive, Park Drive, Richardson Drive, and Joeger Road. Additionally, the board approved a $1.2 million contract with UNICO Engineering for construction management services. Administrative and planning work is expected to begin soon, with construction starting by spring 2025 and lasting 12 to 18 months.

Funding for this phase comes from state and federal sources, including $3.5 million from a Green Means Go grant and $9 million from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act allocation.

“I want to thank staff for finding the funding for this without putting the burden on my SMD1 ratepayers, who are already overburdened by sewer costs. This project is very necessary for growth in the North Auburn area,” said District 3 Supervisor Jim Holmes.

The board emphasized the importance of regular communication with residents affected by construction, including neighborhood meetings and courtesy notices to minimize disruption.

Originally constructed in 1960, the current trunkline is near capacity. The extension project, consistent with the Placer County General Plan, will add approximately 22,400 feet of pipeline with diameters ranging from 24 to 30 inches.

The contract was approved by a 4-1 vote. District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson opposed the decision, citing the need for more community outreach and requesting the item be revisited at the board’s next meeting.
