Shreveport, La., enhances water and sewer bill assistance program, expanding relief for residents
(UI) — In a move aimed at easing financial burdens for residents, the City of Shreveport, in conjunction with the Department of Water and Sewerage, has announced significant updates to the Shreveport Water Assistance Program (SWAP). Designed to provide relief for water and sewer bills, these changes reflect a concerted effort to ensure equitable access to essential services for all citizens.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux emphasized the city's commitment to eliminating barriers to vital resources, stating, "SWAP represents our city's dedication to assuring that no resident faces barriers in accessing essential services." The enhancements to the program seek to uphold this commitment by offering a streamlined application process and broader eligibility criteria.
Partnering with the United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA), the City of Shreveport has made significant strides in making SWAP more accessible to those in need. Notably, individuals receiving income-based assistance such as SNAP, Medicaid, or LaMoms now automatically qualify for SWAP upon demonstrating residency at the associated address. Moreover, residents not enrolled in these programs may still be eligible by meeting specific income requirements.
LaToria W. Thomas, President, and CEO of UWNWLA, underscored the importance of collaboration in ensuring residents have access to vital resources, stating, "United Way is proud to collaborate with The City of Shreveport and the Department of Water and Sewerage in ensuring that residents in need have access to vital resources."
To facilitate enrollment, the United Way and the Department of Water and Sewerage are organizing several signup events across the city. Residents are encouraged to attend these events to learn more about the program and complete their applications.
Once enrolled, participants will receive a 10% credit applied to their monthly water and sewer service charges. However, it's crucial to note that this credit does not cover past-due amounts or charges for other services.
Director of Water and Sewerage, William Daniel, highlighted the department's commitment to community service, stating, "SWAP embodies our department's commitment to serving the needs of our community."
Residents are reminded that annual requalification for SWAP is necessary to continue receiving benefits. Additionally, those experiencing financial difficulties can explore relief options, including long-term payment plans, by contacting W&S Customer Service.
