Southport merges water and sewer services with Brunswick County

(UI) — The City of Southport in North Carolina has merged its water and wastewater systems with Brunswick County Public Utilities, affecting around 3,500 customers. This transition is effective immediately.

Customers currently billed by Southport will receive their first bill from Brunswick County in August 2024. This change does not include the Rivermist residential community and nearby commercial properties.

The water and wastewater rates charged by Brunswick County are similar to those previously charged by Southport, so customers should not see a significant difference in their bills if their usage remains consistent. Rates can be viewed on Brunswick County’s website.

Customers do not need to contact Brunswick County Utility Billing for the initial setup, but they will need to re-establish payment preferences like Automatic Bank Drafting or Online Payments. Payment options are available on the County’s website.

As of June 18, 2024, Southport customers have received their final utility bill from the City of Southport. The first bill from Brunswick County, issued on August 1, 2024, will cover a six-week service period from late May to early July 2024. Accounts closed between May 29 and June 17, 2024, are exceptions.

Southport-area customers will see a pro-rated monthly base service charge on their August bill. A typical residential customer’s base charges are $16 for water, $5 for irrigation, and $39 for sewer. Detailed rate information is available online.

Starting in September 2024, Brunswick County will issue utility bills for Southport customers on the first business day of each month.

Southport’s Residential Garbage and Yard Debris service charge of $12.25 per month will also be included in the Brunswick County utility bill. Residents should contact the City of Southport with any questions regarding this service, as Brunswick County does not manage it.

Rivermist Customers:

The Rivermist community and some nearby commercial properties are already Brunswick County water customers and will not see the same billing changes. The City of Southport will issue its final wastewater bill for Rivermist properties on June 26, 2024. The next bill from Brunswick County, issued on August 1, 2024, will include both water and wastewater charges for a traditional monthly service period. The bill will also include the fee for Residential Garbage and Yard Debris if applicable.

Rivermist customers who already use Automatic Bank Drafting or Online Payments for their county water bills will not need to re-establish these preferences. Payment options are detailed on the County’s website.
