Ohio allocates $122.7 million for critical water infrastructure upgrades

(UI) — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced $122.7 million in grants to enhance water infrastructure in 59 counties. This funding marks the sixth round of the Ohio BUILDS (Broadband, Utilities, and Infrastructure for Local Development Success) Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Grant Program.

The latest grants will support 43 new projects with $84.5 million and provide $38.2 million in gap funding for 33 ongoing projects facing cost overruns. Since its inception in 2021, the program has allocated nearly $620 million to improve local water infrastructure across all 88 Ohio counties.

“These investments are transformative for many Ohio communities,” said Governor DeWine. “The projects we’re funding go beyond new pipes—they're about protecting the health and wellbeing of Ohioans.”

The grants will alleviate financial burdens on community leaders by funding critical needs like water distribution systems, waterline extensions, and water tower replacements. Additional projects include replacing sanitary sewer systems, preventing sewer backups, and extending sewer lines to support economic growth.

“Investments in our communities’ infrastructure are key to expanding sites for new businesses and housing that the people who work at these businesses will need to live and thrive,” said Lt. Governor Husted. “This program is a key part of our efforts to ensure every community has the foundation in place to improve the quality of life to make Ohio a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The sixth round of funding was made possible through continued support from the Ohio General Assembly in the current operating budget. Administered by the Department of Development, the program received 703 applications this round, requesting over $1.4 billion, highlighting the ongoing need for water infrastructure improvements.

“Ohioans often share the transformative impact these projects have on their communities,” said Development Director Lydia Mihalik. “Thanks to the support from state leadership, we can create sustainable solutions for more areas.”

Beyond water infrastructure, Ohio BUILDS invests in broadband expansion, brownfield redevelopment, demolition of blighted buildings, and more, aiming to improve quality of life and foster economic growth statewide.
