Massachusetts received over $260 million for water, sewer infrastructure upgrades in 2023
(UI) – According to The Salem News, Massachusetts received a “massive influx” of funding in 2023 to upgrade aging sewer systems across the state and improve drinking water quality. Citing “newly released state data,” The Salem News reported that Mass. Gave over $260 million to municipalities to perform said water system upgrades in 2023 through the state’s Clean Water Revolving Trust Fund.
Most of the funding comes from President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure law, signed in Nov. 2021, as well as President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act, which allocates nearly $2 trillion in funding for various infrastructure projects across the country.
The money couldn’t come soon enough, as the state handles ongoing challenges brought about by water and sewer infrastructure dating over 100 years old.
Two notable projects include:
- The city of Haverhill received over $12.8 million in 2023 for water and sewer system improvements. Some of the projects are almost complete as of Jan. 2024.
- The city of Lawrence will receive $6.8 million for various sewer and stormwater projects.
This increase in spending, over 60% more than that of 2022, “provided extensive additional funding that has been leveraged to improve and innovate the commonwealth’s SRF programs,” said Treasurer Deb Goldberg, and will have “a long-term impact for the commonwealth that pays dividends in the years to come.”
