Gainesville, Ga., halts sewer spill into Lake Lanier, addresses issue promptly
(UI) — The Gainesville Department of Water Resources has successfully intervened to contain a sewage overflow into Lake Lanier, AccessWDUN reported.
An announcement from the City of Gainesville revealed that the spill, detected on Jan. 9, was swiftly addressed within a two-hour timeframe after its detection.
Responding to a high-level water alarm in the city's sanitary sewer collection system around 12:50 p.m., Gainesville officials discovered a discharge entering Lake Lanier in the Honeysuckle Lane/Harbor Cove area. The discharge was effectively halted by 2:20 p.m. on the same day, and the water level subsided.
Approximately 1,000 gallons of sewage reached Lake Lanier, according to estimates from Gainesville's Department of Water Resources. A thorough assessment of the spill area in the lake revealed no signs of dead or stressed aquatic life.
In adherence to protocols, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was promptly informed of the spill on Tuesday afternoon by the Department of Water Resources. Local signage was also posted to notify residents of the incident.
