Lynchburg, Va., downtown renewal progresses with new utility upgrades
(UI) — The City of Lynchburg's Phase IV Downtown Renewal Construction Project will temporarily close a section of 12th Street between Main Street and Church Street to accommodate water main construction. The closure will facilitate the ongoing upgrades to the city's aging underground utility infrastructure.
During this period, Main Street will remain open for eastbound traffic to access the Lynchburg Community Market parking lot. Temporary steel plates will cover the excavation site during the day.
Additionally, water service will be temporarily interrupted for properties along Church Street, 12th Street, and Main Street as crews work on a water main cross connection. The city advises motorists to use caution as crews install a permanent asphalt patch on 12th Street.
The Downtown Renewal Construction Project, which began in 2016, represents a multimillion-dollar investment in Lynchburg's infrastructure. After completing the underground work, the streetscape will be enhanced with new brick sidewalks, historically designed streetlights, new trees, and redesigned parking areas to improve the pedestrian and vehicular experience.
