Panama City Beach, Fl. applies for $3 million grant to develop “controversial” stormwater project
(UI) – On Thursday, the Panama City Beach City Council voted to apply for a grant worth $3 million from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to build an offshore stormwater outfall close to Lullwater Lake. Officials expect the outfall construction to cost over $41 million.
The city already received $21 million for the project in 2021 through the DEO’s Rebuild Florida General Infrastructure Repair Program. The controversial stormwater project would combine outfalls near Lullwater Lake and Calypso Resort and Tower, send the water underground and place it roughly 1,500 ft. into the Gulf of Mexico.
The stormwater outfall doesn’t have a set timeline as multiple studies, including engineering and environmental, must still be conducted. However, the project will be the first of it’s kind in the Gulf region, with other coastal communities finding success with similar ventures.
