Engineering group recognizes sewer project in Long Island’s Westhampton Beach
(UI) — At a banquet held at Westbury Manor on June 1, the American Society of Civil Engineers presented the Village of Westhampton Beach with the 2023 ASCE Long Island Branch Quality of Life Award, the Long Island Press reported.
The village was honored with an award for its sewer infrastructure project, aimed at removing 5,000 pounds of nitrogen annually from Moniebogue Bay. This reduction signifies a 24% decrease, according to the Long Island Press.
Additionally, the project will address limitations in the village's downtown area, enabling the utilization of the apartments located above the Main Street shops and creating more dining options.
The village advanced the state's shared services objective by cooperating with Suffolk County to connect its collection and conveyance system to the county's wastewater treatment facility at Frances S. Gabreski Airport.
To make this common goal a reality, the Board of Trustees and Mayor Maria Moore collaborated closely. At every level of government, including New York State, Suffolk County, and Southampton Town, there was a lot of support for the project.
The renovation was supported by the Southampton Town Community Preservation Fund (CPF), the NYS Environmental Facilities Corp (EFC), and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
The town recruited Nick Bono and James Vierling's engineering team at H2M to develop the design and lead the village through the project. The sewage and conveyance system was put in place by Thomas Novelli Contracting Corp.
