Navy reports break in 8-inch sewer line, releasing over 1,000 gallons in Pearl Harbor

(UI) — The U.S. Navy disclosed on Dec. 15 that a rupture in an 8-inch sewer line near Hickam housing on Dec. 14 resulted in the discharge of 1,050 gallons of untreated wastewater, Hawai’I Public Radio reported.

The incident, which was made public by the Navy on Friday evening, saw approximately 850 gallons of untreated sewage entering a storm drain leading to the ocean, located 1.7 miles away through a canal near the military's Mamala Bay Golf Course and the Honolulu airport, according to Hawai’I Public Radio.

Efforts to mitigate the impact were reported to have successfully recovered around 200 gallons from the vicinity of the sewer line break, as stated in a Navy press release.

This incident comes after the state Department of Health's declaration in September 2022, expressing its intention to impose a fine of $8.7 million on the Navy. The fine was proposed due to allegations of the Navy discharging untreated or partially treated sewage into state waters from its treatment facility near Pearl Harbor.

It's worth noting that the treatment plant in question serves the majority of individuals relying on the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam water system.
