Fiber Installation Contract Awarded for Lake Ontario Project
Crosslake Fibre has selected IT International Telecom Canada to complete the fiber installation for its Lake Ontario submarine cable project. The 58-km system across Lake Ontario is part of a 131-km system connecting Toronto, Ontario and Buffalo, N.Y. with critical telecommunications infrastructure.
Under the terms of the contract, IT International’s C.S. IT Intrepid vessel will transport and install the 96 fiber pair cable in July and August of this year.
Last month, Crosslake Fibre awarded contracts to supply the high-fiber-count submarine cable and construct the Horizontal Directional Drilled (HDD) shore ends for the project. According to the company, the construction of the shore ends is currently in progress with the terrestrial backhaul from the shore ends to downtown Toronto and Buffalo in development.
Once completed, the Lake Ontario project will be the first unrepeatered submarine fiber-optic cable system across Lake Ontario to directly connect Toronto, Canada and Buffalo, N.Y. with dark fiber. It is expected to be in service in Q3 2018.
