Water Main Break Causes I-694 Sinkhole in East Twin Cities

OAKDALE, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a large water main break has caused a giant sinkhole under Interstate 694 in Oakdale and is slowing water pressure for residents of the eastern Twin Cities suburb.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says the freeway was temporarily closed for two miles in both directions between 10th Street and 34th Street, starting about 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Oakdale police spokeswoman Michelle Stark says motorists should plan on taking a new route during Monday’s morning and afternoon commutes.

Stark told the Star Tribune the break happened in a 12-inch-diamter pipe connected to the municipal water supply. She says the interstate driving surface has not been affected, and no one has been hurt.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said utility work would be underway most of Sunday afternoon.
