Jail Temporarily Takes Inmates Due to Water Main Break

AMHERST, Va. (AP) — Inmates at a Virginia jail were temporarily transferred to another jail following a water main break in a nearby town.

The Amherst New Era-Progress reports 98 inmates at the Pittsylvania County Jail were moved to the Amherst County Adult Detention Center on Friday after the town of Chatham experienced a water main break last week. The move was made with the assistance of the Department of Justice and the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority.

Pittsylvania County Sheriff Michael Taylor says he was concerned about the impact on the use of fire hydrants, bathrooms, and drinking water. He says staying at the facility would have required more human power.

Taylor says the Pittsylvania inmates will be returning to the facility within the week.
