Democrat Stone Leaving Mississippi Senate for Utility Job
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — A Democrat from northern Mississippi is leaving the state Senate to become manager of a local utility company.
Sen. Bill Stone of Holly Springs tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that his resignation will take effect Monday.
The Mississippi Constitution bans people from working in two branches of government at the same time.
Stone says he cannot continue serving in the Legislature because his job as head of the Holly Springs Utility Department will be in the executive branch.
The 51-year-old has been in the Senate since January 2008 and is currently the chamber’s Democratic leader. Republicans hold a 32 of 52 Senate seats.
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant will set a nonpartisan special election to fill the District 10 seat in Marshall and Tate counties.
