Washington Governor Signs Safe Digging Bill
OLYMPIA, Wash (AP) – Governor Inslee signed a bill designed to save lives, or at least prevent headaches.
We’ve all seen the signs: Call before you dig.
The worst case scenario for ignoring the warning is tragic: An exploding gas line or thousands of volts of electricity shooting up through a shovel.
Even a ruptured water line or a severed fiber-optic cable can ruin someone’s day.
Democratic 40th District Representative Jeff Morris sponsored legislation that makes the Call Before You Dig program permanent.
Morris says his commitment to the program relates back to a Bellingham tragedy.
His district includes Whatcom Falls Park, where a leak and fireball from a damaged pipeline in 1999 killed three people and caused tens of millions of dollars in damage.
