UCT: Let's Plan to Meet (and Learn), For Real!

It’s time to get back to in-person learning and networking and the Underground Construction Technology International Conference & Exhibition (UCT) is the place! Join your colleagues and friends Tuesday, July 13–Thursday, July 15 at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tenn., for much needed face-time and training.

UCT is the premier meeting place for business-minded professionals in the underground utility infrastructure market. The focus is on the total industry – trenchless and open-cut construction and rehabilitation. The program includes interactive presentations, panel discussions, and we are excited to bring new and re-imagined elements to make your experience even better than previous shows!

New for 2021 is the UtiliTech Conference, being held in conjunction with UCT. UtiliTech is for the natural gas utility industry and features a program track on Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13, and exhibits.

Also new for 2021 are the CIPP 50th Celebration education track and the Pioneers of CIPP awards and reception taking place on Tuesday. The track will look at the 50-year history of CIPP and the reception and awards ceremony, developed by a CIPP industry committee, will honor Bob Affholder of SAK and CIPP founder, Eric Wood (honored posthumously).

This year, sewer and water professionals will be able to select from two keynote presentations on Tuesday. Scott Potter, with Nashville Water Services will kick off the Sewer Construction/Rehabilitation Track at 8:30 a.m. and Richard Thomasson, P.E.,
a trenchless technology advocate for more than four decades,
will lead off the new CIPP 50th Celebration track.

Horizontal directional drilling professionals will have a dedicated track and will see the return of the popular HDD Roundtable – a forum for candid conversations among contractors. Wednesday evening, the HDD industry will network during the HDD Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception.

You’ve seen him in the RehabZone, you’ve seen him leading educational sessions and now you can see him during a special luncheon in his honor – the 2021 Most Valuable Professional of the underground infrastructure industry, George Kurz, P.E., DEE! Kurz, of Nashville, Tenn., has 43 years of experience in state and local government, sewer service contracting and consulting engineering. For 30 years, he has focused on the development of a strategic approach for eliminating infiltration and inflow (I&I) in municipal sewer systems and standardizing methods for measuring effectiveness of rehabilitation using flow monitoring.

The following pages highlight your UCT experience. See the full program, secure your hotel room and register at UCTonline.com.

We are super excited to see your face at UCT in Nashville – soon!

Pipeline Assessment & Certification Program (PACP) Recertification Course

The goal of PACP, the North American Standard for pipeline defect identification and assessment, is to have pipeline system owners create a comprehensive, consistent database to properly identify, plan, prioritize, manage, and renovate their pipelines, based on condition evaluation.

This course will recertify your current PACP certification. The class includes one day of training and the latest version of the manual.
The cost to attend is $400. Registration is subject to approval.

For details and to register, email rodthorn@swbell.net.

The Center for Underground Infrastructure Research & Education (CUIRE), at the University of Texas at Arlington, will hold its 19th Annual Pipeline and Trenchless Technology Training and Certification Schools, in conjunction
with UCT. For details and to register, contact CUIRE at (817) 272-9177 or email: cuire@uta.edu..

Monday, July 12

8 a.m.–Noon

Advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) School (Part One): Planning and design of large, mid- and small-size HDD projects, from inception to closeout and delivery. Topics include pipe loads, bore planning, drilling fluids and case studies.

Geotechnical School (Part One): Geotechnical requirements for both trenchless and open-cut applications, soft soils and rock investigations methods, and how ground conditions affect trenchless feasibility and productivity.

Pipe School (Part One): Applications, capabilities, manufacturing, standards, advantages and limitations of steel, and rigid pipes, such as clay and concrete, and new developments in these materials and joining systems.

1–5 p.m.

Advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) School (Part Two): Includes construction projects of all sizes, plus tracking, tooling and locating, and case studies.

Geotechnical School (Part Two): Planning, geotechnical reporting and contracting requirements for trenchless technologies under different ground conditions.

Pipe School (Part Two): Covers the same topics as Part One, but for flexible pipes, such as ductile iron, PVC, HDPE, fiberglass and polypropylene.

1–5:30 p.m.

“Think Like Water, Act Like Essential” is the theme for the I&I elimiNATION workshop. During this half-day event, industry experts will guide you through the root causes of infiltration and inflow into sewer systems and share practical solutions for mitigating I&I. Presentations from multiple perspectives will qualify and quantify the I&I problem and justify or nullify corrective measures, with a keen eye on sustainability. Credit is available and a networking mixer immediately follows.

The cost is only $25. Visit UCTonline.com for details and to register.
