The Future is Underground

75th Anniversary

By Robert Carpenter, Editor-in-Chief

From its humble beginnings as a monthly newsletter for pipeline construction to the primary news and information source for all sectors of the underground infrastructure market, for 75 years Underground Construction magazine has been a consistent and constant force covering and supporting the industry.

As Underground Construction celebrates its landmark 75th anniversary, we look back through the years with wonder and awe at the technological advances and the incredible infrastructure that was created. The industry’s diverse and amazing growth seemingly remains in perpetuity.

In the pages of our January 2021 issue, we initiated a monthly series that highlighted various benchmarks of the last 75 years. Starting with the 1940s, our coverage traversed through a 75-year journey and subsequently, the history of infrastructure markets, via monthly timelines and historical summaries. We wrap up the sojourn in our July issue by highlighting the past 21 years of our unique and comprehensive market coverage.

For 75 years, Underground Construction has delivered the greatest printed products for the market. Certainly, our goals continue to include producing the best magazine available; but our aspirations and dreams go much further. In this digital age, we have become the elite, comprehensive provider of data to our markets through a variety of formats. Over the past few years, we’ve taken extraordinary steps to accomplish just that.

Diversity

Our print circulation is simply the best, as it has been since our birth in 1945. Even though it is expensive and was tough to maintain during the pandemic, Underground Construction remains a fully audited publication, while other magazines have taken the easy – and cheap – route of dropping audits. The result is that, without question, we are alone in our ability to deliver the greatest number of highly qualified subscribers available.

Beyond print, we’ve created a website and newsletter package that continues to gain traction and popularity, even while other sites and products stagnate. Rather than filling our digital media with press releases and various other types of gratuitous content, our seasoned editors uncover and develop unique, important and breaking news that impacts all segments of the underground infrastructure.

We constantly maintain an all-out effort to discover and provide relevant, impactful news exclusive to our sites/products. As with the magazine, our digital products were created and remain formatted for the serious connoisseur of underground infrastructure information.

We’ve become very active with our social network presence, and you’ll witness that phenomenal growth continuing in 2021, as well. We’re powerful reporters and advocates of industry activity, regardless of the digital or print method.

As our industry-leading coverage and services continue to move forward, we’re also fully prepared to cover breaking news, as it develops, and distribute that data through all our many digital channels. As the adage states, news waits for no one. With our multiple newsletters, website and social network channels, we now have the ability to distribute the latest news and headlines immediately. The industry needs serious, relevant news and information in a timely fashion, and we make that happen.

We’re extremely proud of what Underground Construction and the underground infrastructure industry have accomplished over the past 75 years. As we continue our journey of industry service and success, our staff has the skills, dedication and energy to set an even higher standard for excellence, leading to the inescapable conclusion that the future is underground.
