FIRST LOOK: Atomic Wash Disinfects Construction Equipment
Jeff Griffin, Senior Editor
Right Turn Supply has developed a liquid cleaner and disinfectant specifically for construction equipment and tools.
To fight the coronavirus (Covid-19), a primary weapon is disinfecting our hands and the things we touch. The fact that hand sanitizers, rubbing alcohol, and strong cleaning solutions have disappeared from many store shelves documents that the importance of sanitation and disinfection is being taken seriously.
Construction work has been designated as essential – therefore, construction continues. But how can equipment and tools essential to construction be sanitized to protect those who use them?
For help meeting these needs, several clients contacted Right Turn Supply, a provider of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) fluids and downhole tools and components.
“They were looking for a method of cleaning equipment to make using it safe for their crews,” said Jon Heinen, founding member and partner of Right Turn. “And there was no cleaner available that also was a disinfectant that could practically sanitize a directional drill or other types of equipment.”
So Right Turn developed Atomic Wash and did it very quickly. It became available April 20 from Right Turn Supply and authorized distributors (a dealer search option is on the company’s web site: rightturnsupply.com).
“The equivalent active ingredients in Atomic Wash are the same as those of quaternary ammonium compounds found in products listed on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.”
In a disclaimer, the EPA notes use of those ingredients in a product is not an EPA endorsement of the product.
Quick and safe
Heinen said Atomic Wash is fast acting, fast drying and safe to use indoors and outside. It eliminates transfer of common pathogens. The use of Atomic Wash is simple:
- To clean: Spray on any surface, wait 15 or 20 seconds for the product to penetrate solids, then wipe clean. Repeat if necessary.
- To Sanitize and disinfect: Pre-clean surface. Spray surface until thoroughly wet. Leave for 10 seconds before wiping.
Atomic Wash is available in 24-ounce spray bottles, half-gallon jugs, 5-gallon containers, and 330-gallon totes. Product in spray bottle is ready to use. For the larger volumes, one-part Atomic Wash is mixed with 10 parts water.
“Elements of Atomic Wash,” Heinen said, “denature proteins and disrupt cytoplasmic membranes to effectively clean high-traffic areas such as hand rails, door knobs and counter tops. Atomic Wash components have been utilized in hospitals, schools, office buildings and veterinary clinics with great success in fighting against infections.”
On construction sites, Heinen said operator stations on compact excavators, backhoe/loaders and directional drills can be quickly disinfected with Atomic Wash.
“Or,” he said, “the whole machine can be treated. For example, rental equipment has been washed after return from a customer and before it goes out again, but likely not disinfected. There are instances where it is appropriate to clean and disinfect the entire machine.”
