Underground Construction Technology

Eagerly Waiting to Welcome and Educate you in January

Unfortunately, every major live trade show opportunity since March has been cancelled. It’s time to get back to serious business by attending the Underground Construction Technology International Conference & Exhibition (UCT). UCT will be held at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 26–28, 2021 for three days of meaningful learning, discovery and networking. (The pre-UCT program workshops are on Jan. 25.) UCT’s business building program features emerging technologies, key industry issues and concerns, and informative case histories.

This early look at UCT 2021 will outline what you will experience during the education program, exhibit hall and networking functions. As we plan ahead, be assured that we are working diligently to make UCT safe for everyone. We will follow guidelines from the major health organizations, relevant state governments and of course, the Music City Center.

The next few months are invaluable for planning and inspiration. Our committees are finalizing the program and registration will open next month. Stay tuned to Underground Construction and UCTonline.com for details.

We’re looking forward to seeing you soon!

Convention Director

New Experiences

We are excited to introduce the UtiliTech Conference, a technology and information event designed for the gas utility industry. This important industry segment will be co-located with UCT and have a dedicated section within the exhibit hall, as well as a unique education track.

UtiliTech’s program will offer strategic insight into issues impacting the gas utility market and explore emerging technology solutions designed to assist management personnel with their daily operations and challenges. And it will go beyond gas distribution, targeting the daily needs of gas utility owners and operators.

UtiliTech is presented by Gas Utility, the new digital information source for natural gas utility management, operations and supervisory personnel in conjunction with Underground Construction magazine and Pipeline & Gas Journal. More details to follow next month.

For program information, contact Robert.Carpenter@UCONonline.com. For exhibit information contact Karen.Francis@GulfEnergyInfo.com or Jenna.Rutan@GulfEnergyInfo.com.

I&I ElimiNATION, the highly successful and popular pre-show program from 2019, is returning to UCT in the form of a comprehensive half-day workshop on Monday, Jan. 25. Attendees will learn why and how to mitigate Inflow and Infiltration in the wastewater collection system. Problems, consequences and corrective action will be presented.

After the workshop, attendees are invited to stay for the networking mixer. Details will be available next month. To be a recognized sponsor of the I&I ElimiNATION workshop, contact coordinator Don Rigby, Madewell Products, don.rigby@madewell.net.

The RehabZone™, the interactive “exhibit within the exhibit” is returning with live demonstrations, emerging technologies and educational stations complete with generic technologies. The RehabZone features a historic sewer and pipe artifacts display and more. Additional plans for 2021 are top secret for now; however, you will not be disappointed!

Nashville’s Sewer System

The Metropolitan Government of Nashville’s earliest record of construction of the collection system was in 1823 and consisted of clay and brick sewers. As the population grew, so did the wastewater system. Over the next 100 years, 400 miles of sewer lines were constructed.

An aggressive sewer expansion program in the 1980s resulted in the need to control combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), thus, the city launched the Overflow Abatement Program (OAP). In part, the program was designed to repair leaking sewers and address CSO impacts.

Metro Water Services’ sewer rehabilitation program, Clean Water Nashville, was established in 2011 and builds upon decades of work in addressing the city’s sewer capacity across the county. The Clean Water Nashville OAP will reduce sewer overflows and improve the wastewater system by 2023.

A department of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, Metro Water Services provides water, wastewater and stormwater services to more than 250,000 customers. It can treat up to 180 million gallons of water daily and delivers drinking water through 3,000 miles of water main; the largest pipe is 5 feet in diameter.

About 186 million gallons of wastewater can be treated daily and during heavy rain, up to 500 million gallons can be treated. Metro Water Services maintains more than 3,000 miles of sewer pipes, with the largest being 16 feet in diameter.

Since the OAP was initiated in 1990, Metro has invested more than $750 million in the reduction of both SSOs and CSOs. Today, the Clean Water Nashville OAP represents a major investment in the community. The cost to bring the system into compliance is an estimated $1.0-1.5 billion.

Stats and Facts

  • 47,000 storm drains, manholes and driveway pipes
  • 2,900 miles of gravity sewers
  • 186 million gallons of wastewater treated daily
  • Population 673,167
